Where We Work

A place, a people, and a partnership.

Friends of Maiwut works in Maiwut County, Upper Nile State, South Sudan, and the surrounding border areas — alongside one of the world's youngest nations and one of its most resilient communities.

Context

A country, a community, a base for the work.

Our work is shaped by three layers of context: the wider story of South Sudan, the lived reality of Maiwut, and the practical platform from which we operate. Each shapes what we do, how we do it, and the people we walk alongside.

01 — South Sudan

One of the world's youngest nations.

South Sudan is one of the world's youngest nations and has endured years of conflict, displacement, insecurity and humanitarian need. Many communities continue to face poverty, fragile infrastructure, limited healthcare, food insecurity and restricted access to education.

Yet South Sudan is also a country of remarkable people — communities holding together through years of hardship, leaders working patiently towards peace, and families rebuilding their lives one season at a time. We are privileged to partner with them.

02 — Life in Maiwut

Resilience, hospitality, and great need.

Maiwut is a place of deep resilience, strong faith and great need. Families live with the lasting effects of conflict and displacement, with limited services and fragile livelihoods. Yet the community is rich in courage, hospitality and hope.

Friends of Maiwut works with local leaders to address practical needs and support long-term rebuilding and community renewal. The partnership is shaped not by what we bring from outside, but by what the people of Maiwut already carry — and what they ask us to walk with them in building.

03 — Operation Base

A donated compound, a platform for service.

Friends of Maiwut operates from the former Samaritan's Purse mission base in Maiwut, which was generously donated to support ongoing service to the community. The base provides a secure and strategic platform for programme delivery, storage, coordination, training, hospitality and partnership.

Stewarding the base well is part of our work — maintaining the buildings, hosting visitors and partners, and making sure it serves the community now and for the years ahead.
